In a global context of environmental concern, many companies have had to change their business model. The ecological impact of a company’s activity is now measurable, and can be an important factor in consumer choice. Some payment companies have even developed measurement tools, allowing their customers to see the carbon emissions resulting from their purchases.

Fintechs with an environmental focus

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.6.6″ _module_preset=”default” custom_padding=”||0px|||”]

We had mentioned them in a previous article, some Fintechs have decided to take into consideration the need for transparency among some consumers. In 2021, their needs have evolved. It is almost imperative for a company to show that it has put in place environmentally friendly measures.

These “green” fintechs have therefore developed measurement tools that allow their users to calculate the carbon emissions of their purchases. These tools indeed take into consideration different factors to estimate the carbon footprint of the transaction:

  • Logistics from production to use.
  • The impact of the destruction, recycling or consumption of the product.
  • The environmental burden associated with the extraction of raw materials.

The factors that can be measured above are mainly for products and goods. It seems more complicated to measure the same impact for services, even if this possibility could be imagined in the future.

Users will have access to the information provided by the smartphone application, which acts as a complete dashboard.

The example of Enfuce and its My Carbon Action application

Enfuce is one of these “green” Fintechs that offer its own measurement tool: My Carbon Action. Based on the information given by users, it will be able to calculate the carbon footprint of the transaction in a relevant way.

The information required for the calculation includes:

  • Diet: is the user a meat eater, vegan or otherwise?
  • The place of residence: does the user live in a house or an apartment? What is his heating system?
  • Preferred mode of transport: does the user drive, walk, take public transport?
  • The origin and shipping method of the product purchased.

Once this information is retrieved, banks and fintechs using the tool will be able to accurately estimate the carbon footprint of each transaction. After the calculation has been made, the next step will be advice derived from these results.

Financial players using My Carbon Action will be able to guide their clients towards more environmentally friendly consumption. The information required for the calculation is accurate and allows for personalized and relevant advice for each consumer’s situation. To go even further, the option to “offset” the energy cost of the transaction is even available for the most committed users.

In a context where consumers are looking for increasingly personalized products and services, the application meets these criteria. The ways to reduce the carbon footprint will thus vary according to the lifestyle of each consumer.

Finally, the implementation of the tool is facilitated by APIs that will allow banks and fintechs to integrate it into their existing applications. They will be able to think about ways to reduce their emissions, as the application is not only intended for individuals.
